Library and Documentation Department
Library
The library contains about 11.000 volumes. Among the most antique manuscripts is the Liber primorum monachorum (1446) of Philippe Ribot
(O.Carm). Furthermore there are 11 incunabula's (before 1500) and 43 post-incunabula's
(between 1501 and 1540). The Library is nearly exclusive about Carmelite history and spirituality
(books and magazines). Publications of Carmelites (O.Carm and OCD) are collected independent of their subject. The collection is
multilingual. Special attention has been given to publications of Dutch Carmelites and to countries strongly related to the Dutch Carmelite
province: Belgium, Germany, Indonesia, Brazil and the Philippines.
Documentation department
The documentation department of the NCI contains 180 microfilms of books and early documents from the period between the fourteenth and eighteenth
century. All are related with Carmelite regional history. The documentation department has also a computerized index with names and data of about 4500 Carmelite friars and nuns
from about 1650 until
now.
Collection of Carmelite illustrations.
Of special interest is the collection of Carmelite illustrations. It consists of an extensive assortment of
illustrations, pictures of Carmelite Saints and other important persons from Carmelite history between the 16th and 20th
century. There are also more than 10.000 photographs of Carmelite persons and buildings from all over the
world. The collection is searchable by means of systematic inventories.
